...Have you ever wondered what America might be like with the liberals firmly in control of the White House and once again both chambers of the national legislature? Caine's Pestilence, a novel of political commentary and intrigue, fictionally explores the possibilities...

When John Caine, an obscure midlevel banker from Detroit, accepts the opportunity of a lifetime to manage the backroom business functions of an important National Institutes of Health research lab in Bethesda, he believes his ship has finally come in. But his quirky penchant for illicit tinkering results in the creation and accidental release of a powerful new virus with effects no one could have imagined. Only he holds the answer to how it can be stopped, and he's not telling. Caine finds himself confronted with a desperate White House and an onslaught of rage from all quarters of the world's bureaucracies.

Fast paced, provocative, and offbeat, this cautionary story is thick with political satire and intrigue. It occurs in a world of government turned upside down, where Nancy Pelosi is president of a dysfunctional United States under her ultraliberal regime, while George Bush is a convicted felon and Rush Limbaugh a fugitive. Caine's Pestilence brings together present and former U.S. presidents, would-be assassins, two Supreme Court chief justices, familiar national media political commentators, and the infamous prison at Guantanamo Bay, all in a story readers will find engaging and controversial.

Caine Pestilence edition by John Bascom Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This was an interesting and a thought provoking book.I found myself stopping in mid sentence and mulling over the status of health care and priorities. Some of the situations were a little too contrived but overall I was pleasantly surprised at what I thought would be a quick light read turned into one that gave me starting points to several discussions with friends.
I began reading Caine's Pestilence ebook at 11pm last night, intending to read a few chapters and finish it later today. I couldn't put it down! The characters and story kept me spellbound til mid-morning when I read the last page. It is a fantastic read and I highly recommend it. I don't know John Bascom personally, but we have worked at the same bank for almost the same number of years and timeframe, and oddly enough, I learned we were employed at the same healthcare facility later in our careers! He is truly a gifted author. I loved everything about the book, but in particular, I enjoyed the tribute page to his wife Nicola (the influence for the book's character Nicole), and best of all, the book gave 'closure' at the end so that I wasn't left frustrated as to how the story ended. Bravo, Mr. Bascom! I can't wait to read your next book!
Spellbinding with an edgy awareness that the ridiculous situation inching Caine to his death is uncannily possible in a too familiar arena of incompetence, greed and slick, stilted language accepted as intelligence.
Caine's observations, inappropriate humor and irreverent satire bind this twisted plot into an intriguing read and a wakeful night. If this hapless nondescript could find he is as "hated as Hitler" what might occur which would place any of us under the jaded jurisdiction of a stealthy Judge Schroth? Totally great reading and we want more.
its OK
Conflicted! A side of me hopes this book comes true. Another side fears the possibility that it might come true!

I can't quite tell whether the author is a progressive or a conservative, or something in-between, but whatever position he holds, he is a chameleon. The books rides the fence of politics beautifully, with a spot-on sense of timing and humor. I found myself laughing countless times at the irony of the circumstances.

The books hero is satisfyingly nerdish. His love interest is a magic trick. The twists and turns are an E-ride at a Disney park.

The culmination is...well...that's for you to decide.
This book was a good read, but their premise of the actual President Obama having been assassinated was uncomfortable, especially in the midst of a politically charged election season. The book did have some interesting thoughts about a society under a Pelosi administration, some of it purely satire. The author could have fictionalized the names without destroying the story, and probably would have sold more books. The book was very readable and was a good value for the cost, despite the historical fiction aspects that detracted from the story.
What an awesome book! Not only is it amazingly entertaining but, down right scary! There is a lot of truth written in this book. I think it should be a requirement for students to read this book. It brings to light the reality behind all of the social programs out there. There may not be quite as much malice behind all of them as in the book, but the fact is, there is money to be made and power to be obtained by keeping people impoverished. Finished in two days and that's only because I had to sleep and work. Otherwise, there is no way I'd have been able to put it down! Looking forward to more from this author for sure!
